Dan Wilson for Montana Supreme Court

In addition, the Contractors PAC is endorsing Dan Wilson for Montana Supreme Court. Judge Wilson worked as a prosecutor in Great Falls, Chinook, and Kalispell. In 1999, he settled into private practice, representing individuals and businesses in a variety of cases, including contract and property disputes, family law, and estate planning. Dan also represented people accused of crimes in both state and federal courts.

Through his conservative judicial philosophy and his commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law, Judge Dan Wilson has earned a reputation as a fair but firm judge. The MCA believes this background will be favorable for contractors against litigious citizen groups.

The Contractors PAC cannot donate to Federal candidates. However, the MCA can endorse candidates and supports the AGC of America’s PAC donations. The MCA has endorsed Aaron Flint, Kurt Alme and Congressman Troy Downing.

Ballot Issues – No on I-194

I-194 is a proposed change in state law to curb corporate spending in Montana’s elections. I-194 would significantly restrict the ability of Montana businesses, trade associations, and nonprofit organizations to participate in public policy debates and ballot initiative campaigns. If passed, any industry could become the target of a future initiative campaign without having the same ability to organize, educate, and advocate in response. Highway construction and aggregate operations are likely targets. We believe that the proposed law would prohibit the MCA and its member companies from even writing letters to the editor on issues. The MCA opposes I-194.

Nonpartisan Courts

One of the constitutional initiatives would preserve the nonpartisan status of Montana’s judicial elections. CI-132 would maintain undeclared affiliations in state judicial campaigns.

CI-133 is a ballot initiative to preserve the ballot initiative process. CI-133 would require state officials to provide ample time to gather signatures and blocking them from disqualifying petitions because of technical issues. The MCA did not take a position on either of these initiatives.
